Scams and cyber threats target businesses in various forms so it’s important to consider ways to protect your business from potentially costly mistakes.
Login with layers
Start by lengthening your passwords into passphrases - try a string of three or four random words from your favourite movie. Keep them unique for each account, and insist your colleagues do the same. Most applications encourage the use of Multi-factor authentication (MFA) too. This requires you to supply an additional piece of information, such as a random code sent by SMS or generated on your phone, to complete the login process.
Update and automate
Scammers and cyber attacks are getting increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to get your money or personal details. Pay attention to operating systems and applications that your business is using. Ignoring updates leaves your business susceptible to technical, software and security issues. Take the time to install software updates as soon as they become available, better still, turn on or confirm a time for auto-updates to avoid disruptions to business as usual.
Scan and protect
Ensure your colleagues are encouraged to question and escalate any activity that looks suspicious or unusual. Messages might include a link to direct you to a fraudulent website or ask you for personal information. With a quality antivirus program, your device can help you scan for malicious software designed to tamper with common tasks.
Control who has access to your data
Maintain a record of all the computer equipment and software used by your business. Have policies and processes in place for your teams and ensure they are mindful of where and how they access their data, emails and the internet.
Think before you click
If you become aware of a scam, or you've been scammed, let other people and your industry association know about it. You can report scams to the ACCC via the report a scam page.
